The New Year has started well with Micaela Sanderson representing Ireland in the Euro Hockey Indoor Championships and UCC Hockey's men's and women's sides back in action.
Congratulations to Micaela Sanderson (Front row, first left) who was part of the Ireland Indoor squad who travelled to Denmark as preparation continues ahead of the 2026 EuroHockey Indoor Championships. The Women’s Development side travelled to Copenhagen to compete in a 3-day tournament, the Mason Cup, where they competed against sides from across Europe, including local Danish, Scottish, and Dutch teams. The Women’s Team secured a silver medal and Micaela featured on the scoreboard scoring in 2 games. Well done Micaela, great achievement.
Last weekend saw UCC represented at the Munster Indoor Tournament in Kinsale. The men (see team photo) turned out on Saturday playing 4 games against tough opposition Cork Harlequins, Waterford, C of I and Bandon. The women (see team photo) played on Sunday and won their 3 games against Dungarvan, Waterford and Ashton, scoring 25 goals in their 3 games. They will play again in the finals weekend to decide who will represent Munster and have an opportunity to qualify for the All Ireland finals. We will keep you in touch with their progress.
The Division 2 side restarted their post Christmas games and had a good win against Cork Harlequins on Sunday at Harlequin Park. They had a slow start in the first few minutes but gained their composure and were excellent for the remainder of the game. Goals from Sophia O Shea (2) and Susie Nolan keeps them top of the Munster league with 31 points and a staggering 55 goals for.
The Division 3&4 Combined Cup was played on Sunday with our Division 3 side winning 3-0 (Aoibheann Keane, Katie O Keeffe, Sarah Bryce) against visiting side Cashel New Inn. This win ensures a semi final game against Clonmel next weekend in Clonmel. Both teams had a close 1-1 battle in the league so it promises to be a good game in their next encounter.
The Division 4 side travelled to Limerick to take on Limerick HC in a play off game for the Combined 3&4 Cup. Limerick got off to a quick start and scored 2 goals in the first quarter putting the student side under pressure. UCC battled on but Limerick scored another making it 3-0. UCC didn't give up and scored early in the 4th quarter giving them a chink of hope. Another goal would have given them a chance but it was not to be. Limerick scored in the closing minutes to seal their victory 4-1. With no training since the 15th December and the Christmas break the team needs to get back to their good form before the break however their "keep fighting attitude" will serve them well over the next couple of months.
