Women’s 1st Team Kick Off Season with Silverware!

Last weekend marked the return to competition for the UCC Women’s 1st team as they travelled to Railway Union Hockey Club for the inaugural RIKA Preseason Tournament. Despite a car exhaust issue that delayed two players, the team rallied and arrived in time for their second match.

The opening game against Old Alex ended scoreless after two 15-minute halves, with Old Alex edging the win on shuttles. UCC bounced back in their second match against Muckross, dominating play and securing a decisive victory. Their third game saw another win over Railway Union, setting up a final rematch against the hosts.

The final remained a draw, but UCC triumphed in the shootout, claiming their first trophy of the season! The day concluded with a presentation by former international Kate Dillon, where Eabha Curran was named Player of the Tournament and Sarah Murphy accepted the trophy on behalf of the team. A celebratory BBQ capped off a fantastic day — a strong start for the squad!

Club Updates
All other teams are now returning to preseason training. The Men’s team continues to grow, and with the appointment of new coach Ken Forde, they’re looking forward to a promising season. Aiming for a top-four finish by Christmas will be key to staying in Division 2 for the new year.

Students return on 8th September, with training expected to ramp up. First years begin college on 15th September, making it one of the busiest weeks of the year.

Excitingly, the Women’s section is expanding with the addition of a 5ths team, reflecting the huge interest and participation. It’s shaping up to be a great season ahead for UCC Hockey!
