Dr Felipe Miceli De Farias on secondment at Moorepark Technology Limited.
Felipe joined APC Microbiome Ireland, a Research Ireland Centre based at University College Cork as an INSPIRE Postdoctoral Fellow and is investigating Novel Bacteriocins as Future Alternatives to Antibiotics. Felipe spent three-months on secondment at Moorepark Technology Limited. MTL’s core business is the rental of their plant to food companies and public research institutions for the purposes of carrying out commercialisation, product and process development, training, or small scale start-up manufacture. The secondment helped me to better understand the upstream and downstream process in a factory environment. Not only this, but the experience also allowed me to understand how to control and administrate the microbiology aspect of a production site to assure the quality of the final product from the raw material intake to the final product. Throughout my secondment time, I also had the opportunity to use the facilities at MTL to develop a scientific study to discover new antimicrobial producing strains. The placement provided me with an in-depth experience in industry collaboration and exposure to industry processes and entrepreneurship. I am very grateful to the INSPIRE programme for having this opportunity.
