FOODPATH at the Society of Social Medicine and Population Conference.
On the 10th and 11th of September, FOODPATH Research Assistant, Nora O'Connor, attended the 70th Annual Society of Social Medicine and Population Conference: International Epidemiological Association European Congress at Queen Mary University in London.
Nora presented one poster titled "Exploring the Barriers and Facilitators for Healthy Eating in Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Areas in Cork City, Ireland and Identifying Leverage Points for Change using Group Model Building", and a second poster titled "Assessing city-level food policies and their potential impact on health inequalities" on behalf of Dr Margaret Steele.
Alongside attending the plenary panel and the general conference lectures, Nora attended the Child Health oral presentations, the workshop "Introduction to causal discovery for epidemiologists: A practical perspective", and the Diet and Obesity oral presentations. The Diet and Obesity oral presentations were particularly interesting as they tied into the work being done in FOODPATH and locally in Cork City with the upcoming Food Strategy. The presentations highlighted the inequalities in food access for those in socio-economically disadvantaged areas and presented research on various interventions, including community food shops and improved school meals.

Nora will seek membership of the Society of Social Medicine and Population Health Early Career Research network to strengthen professional collaborations formed through attendance and to keep abreast of emerging research and development in this field.
