Overview

We are preparing policy briefing notes to help hone in on the biggest priorities for meeting carbon budgets in the energy system.

In the first note, Ireland's transformation to a clean and sustainable energy system: How and why? we outline the five major measures necessary to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the energy system to meet carbon budget obligations this decade. These five measures - wind, solar and grids, electrifying transport, reducing car dependency, decarbonise home heating, and decarbonising industry, make up around 90% of the emissions savings required in the Climate Action Plan for the energy system, and accelerating their delivery is the greatest priority for meeting climate goals. This note also provides an overview of the benefits the energy transition can bring for the climate, and also for social equality and well-being, national security and the economy.

We are also developing a series of one-page briefing notes on the policies that necessary deliver these five measures quickly:

The development of these one-page briefing notes were funded by Friends of the Earth Ireland.
