Abstract

The December issue of the DStream newsletter introduces the Dairy Sustainability through Regenerative Experimentation and Mindsets (DStream) project, launched in April 2024 and funded by the Environmental Protection Agency. Led by Dr. Noreen Byrne at Cork University Business School, this initiative focuses on Irish dairy farms, aiming to foster pro-environmental mindsets and sustainable practices among farmers.

Key highlights include:

  • Project Goals: Investigating how agri-environmental interventions influence environmental experimentation and promoting sustainable practices at farm and landscape levels.
  • Progress: Initial biodiversity mapping of 16 farms in Cork and Waterford/Wexford, supported by ecologists, has established a baseline for biodiversity improvements. Farmers showed enthusiasm for enhancing biodiversity and experimenting with nature-based practices.
  • Tools: The Farming with Nature (FWN) Biodiversity App has been instrumental in mapping biodiversity and empowering decision-making.
  • Next Steps: In-depth farmer interviews to deepen insights.

The newsletter emphasises collaboration, with UCC leading the project alongside partners like NuaFund and BRIDE. Further updates will be available on their upcoming website and LinkedIn page.
