UCC Hosts 17th North South Criminology Conference
On the 23rd and 24th of June, the UCC Department of Sociology and Criminology, and ISS21 Crime and Social Harm research cluster, hosted the 17th North South Criminology Conference, supported by the Collective Social Futures Major Events Fund. During the two-day event delegates enjoyed six roundtable discussions and 61 papers presented across 20 panels.
Keynotes were given by Professor Alex Stevens (University of Sheffield) who presented research from his new book Drug Policy Constellations; John Mooney (Irish Times) was interviewed by Kevin Sweeney about the security threats facing Ireland; Daniel Sexton (Cork ETB) focused on the powerful artwork created by students on the BA Criminology / Cork Prison Inside-Out module. Professor Maggie O’Neill (UCC) then launched the North South Together Prison Education Toolkit.
The conference was attended by around 150 people, including UCC undergraduate students, practitioners, PhD students and academics from across Ireland, the UK, the US and Canada.
The Vicky Conway Award for best postgraduate paper was awarded to Áine Bernadette Mannion (UCC) for her brilliant paper, Discretion Before Design: The Development of Child Cautioning and Diversion Policy in Ireland, 1953–1963.
