What Child/Youth Climate Action Means for Human Rights Law

On 13 March 2024, Professor Aoife Daly delivered her inaugural lecture ‘What child/youth climate action means for human rights law’.
As Principal Investigator, Professor Daly leads the Youth Climate Justice Project, funded by a consolidator grant from the European Research Council. This project aims to reassess children’s rights through their involvement in addressing the climate crisis. It seeks to make legal systems more accessible to children who are standing up for their rights to climate justice. It explores Professor Daly's theory of post-paternalism – that youth climate action involves grassroots rights action from children and youth for the first time, on a global scale, rather than well-meaning adults ‘giving’ children and youth their rights." The project will rethink approaches to the UNCRC with children and youth as leaders, reflecting the disruption of their climate action.
