What is the BLÁTH Project about?
The combined stress from climate change and human activities is predicted to affect over
- 70% of wild flowering plants and their pollinators and,
- approximately 75% of agricultural crops.
Food security and crop yield are threatened as a result of pollinator decline.
Threatened also are ecosystem integrity, biodiversity and ecosystem services.
This could result in a
- reduction of 30% in wild species seed production and,
- a decrease of up to 80% in reproductive capacity for 50% of plant species.
University College Cork has implemented a No Mow initiative since 2018 within the remit of the All Ireland Pollinator Plan.
- Selected areas around the UCC campuses are left un-mowed from March – September to promote safe habitats for pollinators.
