What is BCL (Hons) International?

The BCL (International) is an exciting law degree that combines the essential elements of the BCL degree with a year studying law at one of UCCs prestigious partners in China, the US or Europe. Although this programme has been running for 10 years, it was first offered through the CAO system in 2009.

BCL (International) students spend the third year of their degree studying law through English while based in a top law school in another country. For example, students interested in human rights and international law can study in the European cities of Leiden, Prague or Oslo while those interested in viewing law in action through trial advocacy and real-life law clinics can opt for US law partners in Philadelphia, New York or Saint Louis. Our partner in Shanghai awaits those interested in the unique combination of law with Chinese studies. Feedback from those who take this programme rate it as 'life changing' and 'amazing' and 'invaluable' in terms of the legal and the life experience required.

BCL (International) graduates occupy positions in Ireland's top law firms including A&L Goodbody, Mason, Hayes and Curran and Maples and Calder. They have jobs as law lecturers, have undertaken further study abroad and work in fascinating positions with Irish and international bodies in London, Brussels and beyond.

What will I be Studying?

Year 1	Introduction to the Legal System; Constitutional Law; Law of Contract; Criminal Law; Legal Research and Writing; Plus a module to the value of 10 credits to be chosen from the following electives: Law of Torts; French Language; German Language; Ceart na Gaeilge idir Scriobh agus Labhairt; Written and Spoken Italian; Spanish Language; Accounting 1.
Year 2	Subject choices need to be taken in second year in consultation with the Director of the BCL (International), in order to prepare students for Year 3 abroad. Law of Property; Law of Evidence; Family Law; Administrative Law; Welfare Law; Human Rights Law; Information Technology Law; Public International Law; Medical Law; Environmental Law. Plus modules to the value of 20 credits (or 30 credits if Law of Torts has been selected in first year) from: Commercial Law; Law of Evidence; Family Law; Administrative Law; Welfare Law; Human Rights Law; Information technology Law; Public International Law; Medical Law. Or modules to the value of 20 credits (30 credits if Law of Torts has been selected in first year) from above and modules to the value of 10 credits to be chosen from: French Language; German Language; Usaid agus Cruinneas na Gaeilge I; Italian Language; Spanish Language; Mandarin (must be taken if students wish to study in Shanghai in Year 3); Integrated Marketing Communications (5 credits) plus Stategic Analysis (5 credits)
Year 3	Students spend third year studying international and comparative law at law schools such as Saint Louis University, Missouri; Temple University, Philadelphia; Leiden University, the Netherlands; University of Oslo, Norway; Charles University, Prague; the Czech Republic; East China University of Political Science and Law, Shanghai; Copenhagen University, Denmark; Brooklyn Law School, New York and Helsinki University, Finland. Students are assessed through English on the courses taken in the host institution.
Year 4	Law of Equity; Jurisprudence; Moot Court. Plus modules to the value of 30 credits (other than those selected in previous years) to be chosen from the following electives: Administrative Law; Company Law: Theory and Regulation; Environmental Law; Family Law; Human Rights Law; Information Technology Law; Law of International Trade; Employment and Labour Law; Law of Financial Transactions; Law of Land Transactions; Medical Law; Public International Law; Revenue law; Welfare Law. Or modules to the value of 20 credits from above and modules to the value of 10 credits to be chosen from the following electives: French Language; German Language; Usaid agus Cruinneas na Gaeilge; Italian Language; Management Accounting.

Placement

Summer Placements

The Faculty of Law operates a summer student placement scheme, securing placements and internships for UCC law students who wish to experience legal practice nationally and internationally during their summer holidays. Placements in Ireland include solicitors' offices in Dublin and Cork, the Refugee Legal Service, the Irish Banking Federation and the Offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Attorney General. Examplse of placements abroad include an externship with the Federal District Court in Los Angeles and the Office of the Public Defender in San Francisco.

Entry Requirements for BCL (Hons) International

Irish School Leavers:

HC3 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at H or O level in the Leaving Certificate from Irish, English, another language, and three other subjects recognised for entry purposes. Below are the points for the last 3 years:

Postgraduate Opportunities

Further academic study can lead to the LLB, LLM or PhD Degrees. The LLB is a one-year postgraduate degree, while the LLM is a one-year taught Master's degree. Students can also undertake a specialist taught LLM in either Criminal Justice or ELaw. The College also offers LLM and PhD postgraduate degrees based purely on research.

Career Opportunities

BCL (International) graduates have gone on to undertake further international law studies abroad and to work in international law firms in Ireland and elsewhere.
