Overview of Drama & Theatre Studies (MA)

The School of Music and Drama and Theatre Studies is currently restructuring the MA in Drama and Theatre Studies for 2013/2014. The MA degree taught programme is due to commence again in September 2013

In 2012/2013, the School will be offering the MRes in Drama and Theatre Studies for the first time, which focuses on practice and traditional based research. The MRes is a full-time programme running over 12 months (or a part-time programme running over 24 months), from the date of first registration for the programme. The programme consists of (a) a major research dissertation and (b) taught modules on generic and transferable skills.

The current Irish/EU tuition fee level for this Master programme for the 2012/2013 (1 year full-time) is €5,400. There is also a 2 year part-time (by day) option for this programme and the course fee is half the full-time fee in the particular year of study (THE PART-TIME OPTION IS OPEN TO EU STUDENTS ONLY)

Applied Drama and Theatre
DR6012 Special Studies in Applied Drama and Theatre I (10 credits)
DR6013 Special Studies in Applied Drama and Theatre II (20 credits)

Advanced Theatre Practice
DR6015 Performance: Advanced Theatre Practice I (15 credits)
DR6018 Performance: Advanced Theatre Practice II (15 credits)

Part II
DR6016 Research Dissertation (40 credits)

DR6017 Practice-based Research Project (40 credits)

DR6019 Practice as Research Project (40 credits) Postgraduate Diploma in Drama and Theatre Studies
DR6020 is a stand-alone Directed Study module. It is designed to enable students who have enrolled in the MA in Drama and Theatre Studies and who have successfully completed Part 1 (above) but not completed Part 2 (above) to become eligible instead for award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Drama and Theatre Studies. A student who has successfully completed the 50 credits of relevant MA coursework, may, in consultation with programme staff, opt to complete the 10 credit Directed Study module (DR6020) instead of taking the Part II Research Project (DR6016, DR6017 or DR6019). Upon successful completion of 60 credits the student will be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Drama and Theatre Studies.

Entry Requirements

MA in Drama and Theatre Studies: Candidates must have a Second Class Honours, Grade 2 BA Degree, or equivalent, along with evidence of an established commitment to the field of Drama and Theatre Studies. Applicants with significant professional-level drama and theatre experience will also be considered. All applicants will be required to attend a workshop and/or interview with representatives of the Board of Drama and Theatre Studies and may be required to pass a qualifying test.

The Additional/Supplementary Statement Questions MUST also be completed during the online application process.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent

Part-Time Taught Postgraduate Programmes
