Professor Patricia Leahy-Warren appointed Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery UCC

Congratulations to Professor Leahy-Warren on her recent appointment.

Patricia holds registrations for general nursing, midwifery and public health nursing and degrees at undergraduate, postgraduate, masters and PhD level. In her early career she was the first Masters and PhD graduate from the School of Nursing and Midwifery. She has both a national and international profile in the areas of community nursing and public health nursing as well as maternity care. Patricia has been instrumental in producing a number of key national reports that have had significant impact on clinical practice and policy at Government level, from the blueprint of the Commission on Nursing in 1998 to informing the Community Nursing and Midwifery Strategy in the recent Sláintecare programme. Patricia has made exceptional contributions to teaching and learning through programme development within the school and more broadly building doctoral attribute capacity across the university.

A native of Macroom, Co. Cork Professor Leahy-Warren said she is excited to take up this pivotal leadership position with a dynamic and visionary team at UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery recently ranked top School of Nursing in Ireland and ranked 33 in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023. 

Head of College of Medicine and Health Professor Helen Whelton congratulated Professor Leahy-Warren on her appointment: “We are delighted to have Professor Leahy-Warren join us as Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery. Professor Leahy-Warren brings a huge amount of expertise and experience to this role. She joins us at an exciting time as our School of Nursing and Midwifery is highly rated internationally. The QS World University Rankings by Subject were published in March and our School of Nursing ranked at 33 making it the premier school for nursing and midwifery in Ireland.  High quality nursing and midwifery education is in everyone’s best interest and I am very proud of the quality of nursing and midwifery education delivered by our colleagues in UCC.
