Postdoctoral Position: Metabolic engineering in Brewers Yeast

Postdoctoral Position: Metabolic engineering in Brewers Yeast

A post-doctoral position available to join the yeast group of Dr. John Morrissey in the Microbiology Department of University College Cork, Ireland. This project will employ genetic engineering technology to construct strains in which central and secondary metabolic pathways are reprogrammed to control metabolic fluxes in brewer's yeast.Manipulation of metabolic pathways offers the potential to design strains that impart specific characteristics on the final product. These could include novel flavour compounds or altered alcohol levels. The ability of these strains to produce “designer beer” will be assessed. The successful applicant will form part of a team funded by the Irish Department of Agriculture, that includes yeast biologists, bacteriologists and brewers. The successful candidate will have experience of genetic manipulation of yeast and ideally will have a strong knowledge of metabolic pathways. The appointment will be a two year contract position. Salary will be on national rates, comensurate with experience, and will include pension contributions.

Interested applicants should contact Dr. John Morrissey (j.morrissey@ucc.ie) including their CV and the names of two referees.

Deadline for applications is August 31, 2006.
