The Department of Epidemiology & Public Health is based in the Medical School within the College of Medicine and Health at University College Cork.Current research work in the department is focused on the causes and prevention of Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease, suicide epidemiology, tobacco control and health services research. The Department is involved in major national research and teaching programmes including SLAN 07 (National Health & Lifestyle Survey), TILDA (The Irish Longitudinal Study ofAgeing), the National Self Harm Registry and the Health Research Board PhD Scholar Programme in Health Services Research. The Department has close links including joint appointments with the National Cancer Registry and the National Suicide Research Foundation. The Department of Epidemiology & Public Health is one of the founding members (with the Royal College of Surgeons and Trinity College Dublin) of the Irish Health Services Research Consortium. The Department has extensive involvement in teaching epidemiology and public health in the medical undergraduate degree course and teaches modules in epidemiology and public health on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Colleges of Science,Engineering & Food Science and Business & Law. The Departmentlaunched a new and innovative undergraduate programme, a BSc in Public Health and Health Promotion, in 2004.

The University is located in Cork, the second largest city of the Republic of Ireland.Cork is a port city, built in the valley of the River Lee, with coastline, hills and sandy beaches within easy reach.The city has an international airport and also has car-ferry connections to the United Kingdom and France.

Applications are now invited for the above permanent position.Applications are invited from candidates with a strong academic background in epidemiology and/or public health and/or a cognate discipline.Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the research and teaching activities of the Department and to attract external research funding.The Department has an active research programme including an established MD/PhD training programme based largely on successful competition for peer reviewed research grants.The successful candidate will have a significant leadership role within the Department and will be expected to make a substantial contribution to the consolidation and further development of the Department’s research output, working as necessary with colleagues in cognate disciplines in the Department, the College of Medicine & Health and the wider University.

Candidates must have a primary degree in a relevant discipline. In addition s/he must have a well established research track record and a significant teaching record in Epidemiology or Public Health or a cognate discipline. S/he will have a PhD in Epidemiology or Public Health or a cognate discipline, or an MD with completed higher professional training.

Salary Scale [new entrants]: €99,287 - €116,607
