The Department of General Practice at UCC was established in June 1997 with the appointment of Professor Colin Bradley to the Chair, who led the Department until his retirement in 2022, when he was succeeded by Professor Emma Wallace.
The Department has numerous teaching and research interests, and takes an active role in training medical school students, and supporting and developing GPs and primary care professionals.
The Department of General Practice is part of the School of Medicine which sits within the College of Medicine and Health, and we work collaboratively with a number of departments, schools and Units across the whole College.
Our aim is to improve health and healthcare through the strengthening and development of primary care services, supporting the training and continuing professional development of GPs and primary care professionals, and contributing to the national and international primary care research agenda, with a focus on the management of chronic disease conditions in the community. We play a key part in the delivery of medical school curriculum and placement programme for medical students, and also offer a range of postgraduate CPD and research opportunities.
