The Director of the Biosciences Institute identified the requirement for additional Bioscience research space. To accommodate this, the construction of 1320m² four storey extension to the Bioscience Building has commenced.  Initial funding of €320,000 to develop and lodge a planning application was made available from the 2005 SFI overhead investment plan (OIP). A planning application for the extension was lodged on the 22 December, 2005 and planning was received 23 February 2006. The total estimated cost of the project was €7m.
