Bíonn Roinn an Bhéaloidis gníomhach sa taighde reatha i gcónaí sa dá theanga san Ollscoil agus thar falla amach. Bíonn an Roinn ag iarraidh naisc luachmhara le pobail éagsúla cultúrtha a dhéanamh agus a chothú ar bhonn leanúnach cothrom eiticiúil. Tá an Roinn mórtasach as an obair atá déanta sna réimsí tábhachtacha seo aici.
Roinn an Bhéaloidis: Department of Folklore and Ethnology is always active in ongoing research both in the University and in various cultural communities with whom it creates and maintains valuable and ethically sound links. The department is proud of the work it does in these important sectors.
Léann Dúchais Leictreonach
Is é atá sa Léann Dúchais
Leictreonach ach tionscnamh taighde bunaithe ar an dteicneolaíocht dhigiteach
chomhaimseartha is déanaí amuigh.
Cruthaítear áiseanna foghlama, léinn agus bunachar eolais atá saibhir
agus idirghníomhach. Tugann an Institiúid Um Ardoideachais tacaíocht airgid don
dtionscnamh seo. Faoi láthair is é an téama taighde atá á leanúint ach
‘Béaloideas na mBan’, réimse de bhailiú an bhéaloidis a fágadh ar leathcheann
go minic mar gheall ar chúrsaí inscne agus an tsaoil trí chéile.
Is é Ceann na Roinne, an Dochtúir Stiofán Ó Cadhla, a cheap an taighde seo agus atá á stiúrú le cabhair ón Dochtúir Clíona O’Carroll, Ciarán Ó Gealbháin agus ó na Taighdeoirí Cúnta, Treasa Ní hÉaluighthe, Daithí de Mórdha, Proinsias Ó Conluain agus Piaras Ó Droighneáin. Bíonn taighde ar siúl i ngach ceann de na Gaeltachtaí. Na haidhmeanna atá aige ach:
- Bailiú eolais agus taighde faoi stiúr fhoireann na Roinne.
- Fainaise a sholáthar ar ghnéithe de sheanshaol nó de shaol comhaimseartha na Gaeltachta agus é a chur ar fáil i bhfoirmeacha úsáideacha poiblí (leabhair, CD-Rom, scannán, tráchtas).
- Cur leis an mbunachar eolais atá ag an Roinn agus ag
an dámh trí chéile agus téamaí faoi leith a aithint agus a leanúint suas
sa seanchas.
Cuirfidh an pobal léannta agus pobal na Gaeltachta suim sa taighde so, tá súil againn go ndéanfaidh an pobal an taighde féin uaireanta. Tá sé i gceist iarracht a dhéanamh an tionscnamh a leathnú nó a fhorbairt i dtreonna nua amach anseo. Tá súil ag an Roinn léann dúchais as Gaeilge a spreagadh arlíne, ar an leathanach gréasáin agus i bhfoirmeacha cuí eile.

Léann Dúchais Leictreonach or ‘LDL’ is an Irish language electronic learning initiative, is a multi-media based research project supported by the Higher Education Authority. The current focus of the project is ‘Béaloideas na mBan’ or ‘Women’s Folklore’ and it is directed by Head of Department Dr Stiofán Ó Cadhla with the assistance of Dr Clíona O’Carroll, Ciarán Ó Gealbháin and the Research Assistants in the field. Treasa Ní hÉaluighthe, Proinsias Ó Conláin. Piaras Ó Droighneáin agus Daithí de Mórdha. The project carries out research in each of the Gaeltacht areas. The aim is to research critically important aspects of past and contemporary life in Gaeltacht areas, and sometimes in the wider Irish-speaking community, marrying cutting edge fieldwork with electronic learning and resourcing. It is envisaged that this record will not only interest the public and serve as a resource for scholars and the general public, but that it might also be used as a didactic tool (or learning aid), both within the department and across the School of Irish Learning as a whole. It is hoped that further developments in e-learning, a web site for LDL and online learning opportunities, will follow.

Cork Northside Folklore Project
The Cork Northside Folklore Project began life as an offshoot of undergraduate research in Léann Dúchais. The aims of the project are to identify, collect, document and archive many aspects of local oral history, traditional and popular culture. Individuals are encouraged to pursue their own areas of interest, and with the guidance of Dr. Marie-Annick Desplanques and Mary O’Driscoll and other staff.
They develop projects that cover a wide range of topics. Training has been provided by Roinn an Bhéaloidis: Department of Folklore & Ethnology as well as other experts and specialists in computer and multimedia technologies to provide the quality such research deserves. Project researchers explore their own connections and resources, work with community groups and individuals involved in local history and culture, consult libraries and the internet, to contribute to our archive which includes oral history interviews, photographs, video footage, field notes and questionnaires. Members are encouraged to contribute to the community newsletter 'The Archive' or to create and participate in special projects, such as short films and radio programmes. This has always been a significant portion of our mission: involving and giving back to the community, hopefully helping to the building of the ever-growing, multifaceted, rich and dynamic identity of the people of Cork. We hope to further develop this good work in the future.
