Roinn an Bhéaloidis: Department of Folklore and Ethnology has evolved over a thirty year period teaching, researching and writing in at least two languages, sometimes more. The research fostered in the department has diverse and heterogeneous origins. It owes much to the evolving nature of social research in Europe since the sixteenth century in both native learned Irish traditions and the imperial and global traditions. Interests include the folkloristic, social scientific and ethnological or anthropological. There are European and global interests alongside Irish knowledge traditions. The discipline is still a new one and has great potential for innovation and originality.

Folklore and Ethnology has been to the forefront of innovative ethnological research in Ireland and internationally. The results have been published in peer reviewed and international journals and are continually leading the debates on cultural processes in Ireland (see publications link). The department publishes its own research journal Béascna, an electronic newsletter Nua and a community project newsletter The Archive. It offers public lectures, prizes for storytelling as well as undergraduate ones. Such leadership has been a primary concern of the department for many years.

Tá Roinn an Bhéaloidis: the Department of Folklore and Ethnology á bhuanú féin le tríocha bliain anuas. Bíonn taighde, údaireacht agus léachtóireacht á ndéanamh aici in dá theanga ar a luíod agus níos mó ná dá cheann babhtaí. Tá an léann dúchais agus an scoláireacht faoi leith a chothaítear sa Roinn ag dul siar go dtí an fothaí an léinn sa seachtú céad déag in Éirinn agus ar fuaid an domhain mhóir. Cuireann an Roinn suim i saol an duine sa bhéaloideas, sa taighde eolaíochtúil shóisialta nó sa léann antraipeolaíochtúil. Maireann suimeanna domhanda uilíocha láimh ar láimh le suimeanna sa chultúr dúchasach agus san eolas dúchais. Is dámh óg í dámh an bhéaloidis agus tá scóp iontach inti do léann bunúil nuálaíoch. Tá Roinn an Bhéaloidis chun cinn sna réimsí seo cheana agus toradh an léinn go dtí seo foilsithe go náisiúnta agus go hidirnáisiúnta (féach nasc na bhfoilsiúchán). Foilsíonn an Roinn iris dá cuid féin, Béascna, nuachtlitir leictreonach Nua, agus nuachtlitir don phobal The Archive. Cuireann sé léachtaí poiblí, duaiseanna don sheanchas agus duaiseanna do fhochéimithe ar fáil. Bhí an ceannas léannta seo ina chúis áthais ag an Roinn riamh.
