Healthy Ageing

Like the rest of the world, Ireland's population is rapidly ageing, due to reduced fertility rates, and also greater longevity, which is one of humanity’s greatest achievements. Ageing is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon associated with structural and functional changes that can affect physical, cognitive and psychological health. However, there is a large variation between people in the degree of changes with age, and many older people can continue to work, contribute to society and live in relatively good health.

The 'Healthy Ageing' theme at UCC focuses on transforming how we support people across their lifespan to maintain the functional ability that enables well-being in older age. By combining clinical expertise, technological innovation, and person-centred practices, our research aims to promote healthy and active ageing, within its broader societal and economic context.
