Cognition, Mental Health and Wellbeing

The mental health crisis is one of the most urgent global issues. The WHO in 2025 reported that over 1 billion people live with a mental disorder, while mental health needs remain inadequately addressed, despite being a leading cause of disability (World Mental Health, WHO, 2025).

Addressing the mental health crisis also means working on prevention, focusing on wellbeing and flourishing for people at all ages. Importantly, the mental health crisis intersects with other global crises such as climate change, global health emergencies, geopolitical instability and inequalities, requiring a multidisciplinary approach.

The Mental Health and Wellbeing topic in FABS gathers research from social science, medicine, public health, neuroscience, among others, to provide a comprehensive approach to mental health and wellbeing. Maintaining and fostering wellbeing while living with a neurodegenerative condition or a chronic illness, living with mental health conditions, flourishing through the lifespan and in the workplace, women’s health during psychobiological life transitions, the role of music, arts and the lived environment in fostering wellbeing and preventing ill mental health, resilience in face of climate change, are some of the topics researched in the Mental Health and Wellbeing topic in FABS.
