On 16 November last, the annual Perrigo Scholarship awardees, in conjunction with Pharmsoc, were announced.

The theme of this year’s Scholarship, which was generously sponsored by Perrigo, was Antimicrobial Awareness, and coincided with World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, which took place from 18 to 24 November. Antibiotics Awareness Week is an annual observance that raises awareness of the threat of antibiotic resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic use. This year saw the launch of PAMS-Net in August 2022, an initiative by the Health Services Executive (HSE) AMRIC (Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control) group. The network aims to support pharmacists and pharmacy students across all sectors to work towards the common goal of promoting responsible use of antimicrobials in all patients and limiting the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

Individual students or student groups from all years of UCC’s pharmacy programme were invited to create an infographic themed around antimicrobial awareness, with the target audience being university-based students.

Students submitted over 30 infographics, and the students who created the five best judged infographics (one from each of the five years of the pharmacy programme) received a scholarship of €500.

External attendees included Paul Hatton (National Field Sales Controller, Perrigo Ireland), Marie Philbin (Chief Antimicrobial Pharmacist AMRIC) and Mala Shah (Chief II Antimicrobial Pharmacist, Community Healthcare, Quality and Patient Safety, Health Service Executive).  Both Paul and Marie addressed the attendees before the scholarship recipients were announced.  Hard copies of all submitted infographics were printed for the event and displayed in the School.

The School congratulates all five Scholarship recipients for their excellent infographics, who each received a €500 bursary:

  • BPharm1 - Kate Laffan
  • BPharm2 - Clodagh Ginty
  • BPharm3 - Emily O'Donovan
  • BPharm4 - Emma Crowley
  • MPharm - Laoise Donovan

Following the event, many of the student-created antimicrobial awareness infographics were distributed to a number of hospitals in the region, including those created by Paula O'Driscoll Casanoves, Emily O'Donovan, Kate Laffan, Abby O'Sullivan, Caroline Moore (Cork University Hospital)  and Jan Jasieczko, Jayne Looby, Jennifer O’Connor, Owen Collins and Conor McCarthy, Emma Crowley (Mercy University Hospital, Cork) for display to both staff and patients to further raise awareness of the prudent use of antimicrobials.  The infographics created by pharmacy students Conor McCarthy, Owen Collins, Seamus McGonagle, Kate McCarthy, Kate Laffan, Clodagh Ginty, Laoise Donovan and Emma Crowley have also been on display on the UCC Student Hub digital noticeboards.

We congratulate all our students who submitted infographics for this very worthwhile event, to our scholarships sponsor Perrigo and to Marie Philbin and Mala Shah from AMRIC.
