The Cervical Screening Report for LGBTI+ people from inception to implementation.

The National Screening Service in partnership with LINC and CervicalCheck, recently launched ‘LGBT+ Cervical Screening Study’, a report examining the knowledge of, attitudes towards, participation in, and experiences of cervical screening in Ireland.  The study set out to examine how Ireland compares to the global standard of queer people’s participation in cervical screening. International evidence spanning more than two decades and from a broad range of countries suggests that lesbian and bisexual women, along with gender minorities who have a cervix, have significantly lower rates of uptake of HPV and cervical checks. The Irish study also found that in Ireland LGBT+ people were also far less likely to present for this life-saving screening.  To view the ‘LGBT+ Cervical Screening Study’ report, you’ll find it online here.  Ciara Mulcahy from LINC will talk about the report, its findings, and the implementation plan for the report's recommendations.

About the Speaker:

Ciara Mulcahy (She/Her) has been the Community Health Worker with LINC for the last three years.  She designs and oversees all health related projects, programmes and resources at LINC inlcuidng physical, mental and sexual health and social and emotional wellbeing.  Ciara holds a BA in Communications, BA in Community Development, MA in Women's Studies and is currently undertaking a PhD in UCC via the DSoc programme.

UCC LGBT+ Staff Network: The Network was founded in 2007 after an initial open consultation forum on Meeting the Needs of LGBT staff in UCC. Its aim is to work in partnership with management and staff of University College Cork to create a safe, inclusive and diverse working environment that encourages a culture of respect and equality for everyone regardless of their sexual orientation, in order that every individual can reach their full potential without fear of discrimination. During Equality Week 2019, the LGBT+ Staff Network launched the new UCC Rainbow Alliance in response to queries from colleagues who do not identify as LGBT+ asking how they can help and support the network. 

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Unit: The establishment of an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Unit in University College Cork in 2017 built on the long legacy and core focus on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion across the University's teaching, research and policy activity with and by staff and students. It extends the work of the UCC Equality Committee, which has existed for many years, advising the University on equality, diversity and inclusion and delivering a wide range strategies, reports and initatives. 

UCC Community Week: This event is part of UCC Community Week 2021. During Community Week, staff and students across the university come together with community and public sector partners to host community focussed events and activities. The week long programme of events celebrates UCC as a civically engaged university.
