Field Ecology Diploma Class 2015 Gets Off to a Good Start.

25 Feb 2015

The School of BEES was delighted to welcome 16 Field Ecology Diploma students back to UCC for another exciting year of ecology, science and research.

The 2015 Field Ecology Diploma class started their year last weekend. It was a cold weekend but the enthusiasm of both lecturers and students meant the fieldtrip and lectures were received very warmly. The students enjoyed a very interested session with Dr. Lesley Lewis learning about the ecology of Ireland’s wetland birds, particularly those that migrate here for our winter season.

The field trip to Cork Harbour was a huge success with cries of delight at first sightings of colourful Shelduck and Redshank feeding on the mudflats. Lucas Jagodzinski gave a very enthusiastic and interesting lecture on ecotoxicology and then the students got stuck in to reading and discussing research papers with a critical eye and talking about their own research project ideas.

Exciting times ahead for the 16 students with proposed research projects ranging from effects of water pollution on freshwater invertebrates, comparing biodiversity of bird communities in different hedgerows and looking at differences in behaviour of feral and captive goats.
