Vacancy - Post Doctoral Researcher in the area of Augmented Reality (AR), CONNECT, nasc research, School of Computer Science & Information Technology, UCC

25 Jul 2024

One Post-Doctoral position is available in the area of Augmented Reality (AR) (24 months)

Project Title:  Optimised Resource Management for Multi-user Augmented Reality Systems  (CONNECT2-T4)

This Post Doctoral Researcher position provides an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and inclusive research team at University College Cork (UCC), working within the large-scale national CONNECT research centre, hosted by UCC’s new nasc research centre and under the supervision of high-profile professors and academics in the area of the networking.

Augmented Reality (AR) promises a future where the digital and physical worlds seamlessly intertwine, transforming human-computer interaction and information consumption models. AR applications overlay digital content on the real world by primarily processing the camera feed among other sensors such as GPS and inertia sensors. However, supporting highly accurate computer vision tasks, such as object detection and recognition, within a tight latency budget are beyond the computing and energy capabilities of typical end devices, e.g., smartphones and head-mounted displays.  Hence, evolving edge computing and high throughput network technologies, e.g., WiFi 7 and 5G, are envisaged as key enablers for AR applications. However, the shared nature of computing and communication resources requires intelligent coordination of such resources to ensure the best user experience and resource utilisation.

We are now looking for a Post Doctoral researcher to join the nasc research/CONNECT Centre team and participate in our vibrant research community here at CSIT. The appointee will work on a project focused on wireless resource management for augmented reality applications.

The appointee is expected to make significant contributions to the research agenda of the CONNECT research centre, working closely with the Principal Investigators Dr. Zahran and Professor Sreenan and with academic collaborators. We welcome applications of researchers with an established publication track record, appropriate to their career stage. Candidates are expected to have experience in one or more of the following areas such as: ‘wireless networks’, 'media streaming', 'resource allocation', 'optimisation', 'machine learning', 'network simulations' and ideally have practical experience with testbeds and/or deployments. In line with our Athena SWAN ambitions we especially encourage women to apply for these positions.

The Centre comprises approximately 50 people working on networks, security and systems research. CSIT is a large, research-focused school, participating in many major national and international research collaborations, and with extremely strong links to industry partners. The School of Computer Science & Information Technology (CSIT) at UCC is part of four major Irish SFI-funded research centres, CONNECT - Centre for Future Networks & Communications, Insight - Centre for Data Analytics, Lero - Irish Software Research Centre, CONFIRM - Research Centre for Smart Manufacturing and it is also hosting two large doctoral training centres (CRT ADVANCE and CRT AI).

Salary: €44,347 - €50,805 p.a. (IUA Salary Scale)
