Ruth at the IGS Annual Event: Designing & Delivering Sustainable Age Friendly Healthcare
4 Oct 2025
At the recent Irish Gerontological Society Annual Scientific Meeting in Killarney (2-4 October 2025) Ruth presented the findings and learning to date from the FaME Ireland project and the impact of FaME programme on falls prevention and falls management. Ruth presented in the symposium 'Towards a National Falls Strategy: Prevalence, Consequences, and Advancing Prevention and Care in Ireland', alongside colleagues from TILDA (Dr Robert Briggs) and the Irish Fracture Liaison Service (Mr Michael Bailey).
The presentations in the symposium highlighted the limited availability of falls clinics, unclear falls pathways, with poor signposting to local falls prevention programmes. While there are a range of exercise programmes available in the community, health care professionals can often find it difficult to find suitable local programmes for their clients and patients. Similarly, people who fear falling often find community programmes too hard to keep up with. There is a clear need for exercise programmes that reduce falls risk, improve physical activity and social engagement.
