Updates from the Polish team: Research and film screenings in the Ukrainian border region

On 7 June 2026, the Ukrainian village of Waręż, located just next to the Polish-Ukrainian border, hosted another edition of the Good Neighbour Days "Together for Our Ancestors 2026". As part of the event, the pedestrian and bicycle border crossing, which is normally closed, was opened to the public. The programme also included a cycling tour, a visit to the former Catholic church, speeches and concerts.
One of the highlights of the event was a screening of two films directed by Tomasz Ferenc and edited by Maciej Andrzejewski - “Osmoza” and “Smuga” - produced as part of the EuroBorderWalks project. The screenings were attended by residents of Waręż as well as the protagonists of both films: Robert Gmiterek, featured in “Osmoza”, and Jurii Horodko, the protagonist of “Smuga”.
As the organisers commented:
“Their stories show how family experiences, memories of ancestors and multicultural heritage influence the contemporary perception of oneself and the place one comes from. We would like to thank everyone who joined us for the screenings and for the conversations about history, memory and the shared heritage of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland. Meetings like these remind us that a borderland is not merely a line on a map, but above all, people and their stories.”
That same weekend, the village was also visited by Aleksandra Sobańska, who was conducting interviews in the region at the time.
