Potential for duckweed in Ireland

12 May 2025

Duckweed, a small free-floating aquatic plant, has significant economic and environmental potential for the agriculture industry which lies untapped.

In a recent article in the Irish online agricultural news publication Agriland, Professor Marcel Jansen highlighted the twofold benefits of duckweed: Its positive ecological impact through its ability to recycle nutrient waste and enhance water quality, and secondly its potential as feed for livestock.

Several research projects in Prof. Jansen's group explore different aspects of the potential of duckweed. To find more information browse our Duck-Feed website, or contact us for an informal chat.
