New paper on protein extraction from duckweed
A new paper has been published by Jack Prendeville, on his work on extraction methods for protein from duckweed. The article, titled "Comparative Evaluation of Methods for Protein Extraction from Duckweed Biomass" is available as an open access publication in the journal Food and Bioprocess Technology.
This paper is part of Jack's PhD studies, funded by DAFM as part of the Duck-Feed project.
In the paper four fixed-condition protein extraction protocols for dried duckweed are compared, as well as, separately, two extraction approaches for frozen-thawed duckweed.
The extraction methods resulted in different amounts of protein recovery. Overall, no single protocol was superior across all evaluated responses. Instead, the results demonstrate a clear trade-off between protein recovery, concentrate composition and processing intensity, indicating that selection of an extraction strategy depends on the intended process objective.
