Celebrating Duck-Feed graduations

22 Jun 2026

Last Friday, 19 June 2026, we proudly celebrated the graduation of two outstanding researchers of the Duck-Feed project, who have enormously contributed to our sustainability mission.

Dr Cian Redmond was awarded a PhD for his work entitled "Exploring the potential of duckweed (Lemnaceae) as a circular protein crop on agri-food industry wastewaters". Cian was supervised by Dr Neil Coughlan and Prof. Marcel Jansen. Papers that have resulted from his work can be found on our Scientific Publications page.

Leah Bannon was awarded an MSc for her work on the characterisation of the microbiome of wastewater-grown duckweed. Leah was supervised by Dr Niall O'Leary.

Their research was carried out within the Duck-Feed project. This DAFM-funded project aims to increase sustainability of the Irish Agri-Food industry through valorisation of wastewaters using protein-rich duckweed species, and Cian and Leah's work has greatly contributed to this. Find out more about our project on our Project page.
