Dr Neil Coughlan

Neil is a native of the Bride Valley in West Waterford. Since the completion of his PhD in 2020, Neil has honed his expertise in precision agriculture and food-security technologies, including phytoremediation systems. Neil also holds BSc. (Hons.), MSc. and PhD degrees, as well as Higher Diplomas in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, and in Executive Management in Business, along with a Certificate in Agricultural Entrepreneurship.
Neil leads the Azbio project drawing together expertise from a wide network of collaborators to support the design, development, and performance assessment of indoor cultivation systems for Azolla.

Jingrou Chen
PhD Researcher
Jingrou is an international student from China. She completed her MSc in Biotechnology at University of Galway, where her research focused on the harvesting of hydrophobic microalgae from wastewater using the electro-flotation technique
Jingrou is currently undertaking a four-year PhD within the Abzio project, titled: “Sustainable valorisation of agri-food wastewaters”. Her project will focus on Azolla cultivation to investigate the optimal nutrient remediation from wastewaters and develop peat alternative using waste Azolla biomass.
