European Network for Digital Anthropology (ENDA) workshop in Cork

22 Jul 2025

The first Early-Career Workshop of the European Network for Digital Anthropology (ENDA), in collaboration with the CyberSocial Research Lab, was held in Cork. We had two days of wonderful discussions and are excited about our network taking shape!

The European Network for Digital Anthropology (ENDA) organised its first Early-Career Workshop at University College Cork, in collaboration with the CyberSocial Research Lab. The workshop took place on the 27th and 28th of June and included a fascinating keynote by Prof. Rosana Pinheiro-Machado from University College Dublin, as well as the participation of brilliant international early-career researchers.

Prof. Pinheiro-Machado's talk explored the intricate relationships of digital platforms, popular entrepreneurs and (populist) politics, in Brazil and elsewhere, preparing the ground for two days of lively collective reflection on the challenges of digital technologies today.

Workshop participants discussed their research topics and shared their insights on our digital(ising) worlds. Lukas Griessl from the University of Tübingen presented his ongoing research on generative AI in academia. Oisín O'Brien (Leuphana University) investigates trust in digital identification systems in Estonia. Nkululeko Masana Dlamini (Geneva Graduate Institute) focuses on the effects of platformisation on social life. Boris Koenig from the Catholic University of Louvain presented his work on online scammers in Côte d'Ivoire. Wagner Guilherme Alves da Silva's (University College Dublin) research focuses on the relationship between political extremism and digital entrepreneurship. Emmi Holm (University of Helsinki) explores the commodification of digital activism and James McGrail (Leiden University) looks into Muslim experiences of digitalisation in Singapore.

A huge thanks to all the participants for their contribution and for sharing their exciting research with us. We look forward to consolidating the ENDA network and plan future collaborations. We also thank our sponsors, the European Association of Social Anthropologists and Research Ireland.
