The perspectives of hearing children of deaf parents and their exposure to deafness stigma

Presented by Dr Noel O’Connell (School of Applied Social Studies & ISS21).

In collaboration with the ISS21 Children and Young People Cluster, this seminar focuses on the Science Foundation Ireland and Irish Research Council funded project – CODA. It presents an ongoing literature review on hearing children of deaf adults’ (CODAs) perspectives on their experience of deaf culture. Themes identified in the literature include: CODA constructing bicultural identities and CODA experiences of stigma, parentness, and cultural brokering. There is limited research reporting CODAs experiencing parental stigma in Ireland, yet CODA voices are often subsumed within those of their deaf parents and deaf siblings. This seminar will outline plans for the CODA project forthecoming the need for research which gives voice to CODAs in Ireland to better understand the complex and multidimensional factors that contribute to the challenges they face growing up in deaf culture and sign language. Read more about Dr Noel O’Connell and the CODA project here.

An international sign language interpreter will also be present at this seminar.

11.00AM – 12.00 PM
