ABOARD Collective Intelligence Workshops
Practical Information
Workshop Objectives
We will be holding five Collective Intelligence Workshops, and we welcome a broad range of viewpoints, from sceptic to enthusiast.
The Collective Intelligence Workshop methodology is designed to enable a group with sometimes disparate views to reach agreed consensus positions. The outcome of each workshop will be a set of Declarative Statements on the incentivization of Open Research, Responsible Research Assessment practices and the Use of Responsible Research Metrics; these will feed into a position paper and recommendations to DFHERIS and will ultimately inform national policy.
Cohorts, Date Options and Venues
Workshop for AHSS Researchers: March 26, 11AM - 1PM (online)
Workshop for Early-Career-Researchers: April 2, 11AM - 1PM (online)
Workshop for STEM Researchers: April 10, 11AM - 1PM (online)
Workshop Size
We are aiming for approx. 20 participants in each workshop and very much appreciate anyone who is prepared to give their time to contribute to our project. However, in the event of workshops being oversubscribed, we may not be able to invite everyone who expressed an interest in participating.
If this occurs, we will select those who will best ensure that the workshops comprise a representative mix of academic disciplines, career stages, gender, region and type of institution. Anyone not selected will be invited to participate in the next phase of our project: a capstone event (planned for early 2026) at which the Declarative Statements and overall recommendations for the incentivization of Open Research practices will be finalized.
Workshop Information Sheet and Consent
Thank you for considering participating in this research project. The purpose of this paragraph is to explain to you what the project is about and what your participation would involve, to enable you to make an informed choice:
The purpose of this project is the creation of a roadmap for the incentivization of Open Research practices in Ireland. Should you choose to participate, you will be asked to take part, along with other members of the Irish research community, in a once-off collective intelligence workshop which will be facilitated as outlined above. Workshops will be held online. The duration is expected to be approximately 2 hours.
Participation in this project is completely voluntary. There is no obligation to participate, and should you choose to do so, you can refuse to answer specific questions, or decide to withdraw from the workshop. Once the workshop has been concluded, you can choose to withdraw your contribution at any time in the subsequent two weeks after the conclusion of the workshop.
All of the information you provide will be kept confidential, and will be available only to the ABOARD project team. The only exception is where information is disclosed which indicates that there is a serious risk to you or to others. In this case we will inform workshop participants of any such risks and will give appropriate guidance. Please be aware, however, that while we can guarantee that we will maintain confidentiality, we cannot guarantee that group members will do the same.
Once the workshop is completed, an anonymized summary of recommendations and declarative statements will be drafted. This will be stored on a University College Cork supported cloud storage platform. The data will be stored for a minimum of ten years.
The information you provide may contribute to research publications, conference presentations and recommendations for the incentivization of Open Research practices and the use of responsible research assessment practices and to a national statement on the responsible use of research metrics.
We do not anticipate any negative outcomes from participating in this project. This project has obtained ethical approval from the UCC Social Research Ethics Committee. If you have any queries about this research, you can contact us at aboard@ucc.ie.
If you agree to take part in this workshop, please sign the consent form on the day of the workshop.
