Overview of Public Health Nursing (PG Dip)

The Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health Nursing is designed to develop informed and skilled practitioners in the public health nursing field.

What will I be Studying?

Students take modules to the value of 60 credits incorporating 300 hours of structured contact time and clinical practicum.

Students take 60 credits as follows:

NU6041 Public Health Nursing: Principles and Professional Issues (10 credits)
NU6042 Children, Young People and Families (10 credits)
NU6043 Adults and Older People in the Community (5 credits)
NU6044 Health and Health Promotion: Concepts and Principles (5 credits)
NU6046 Research for Community Nurses (5 credits)
NU6047 Clinical Placement: Public Health Nursing (5 credits)
NU6054 Maternal and Child Health Nursing (10 credits)
SS6015 Community Development (5 credits)
SS6016 Health and Personal Social Services (5 credits)

Entry Requirements

Before admission to the programme of education and training leading to registration in the Public Health Nurses Division of the Register:-

The name of the candidate for registration must already be entered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses.
Candidates must have evidence of a minimum of two years general nursing experience within the past 5 years, of which 12 months should be consecutive, working a minimum of 74 hours per month.
Unless the candidate’s name is registered in the Midwives Division of the Register, the candidate must complete an An Bord Altranais approved module or unit of study on Maternal and Child Health as part of the programme.
Candidates must have undertaken a programme of study at National Framework of Qualifications academic level 8 (Honours Degree or Higher Diploma) or provide evidence that they can perform at this level, thereby satisfying the university/college that they have the ability to complete the programme. An academic transcript is a document from a college or university showing final marks achieved and awarded. Candidates must demonstrate that they have undertaken a programme of study at NQF, academic level 8. The academic transcript provided will be used as evidence to demonstrate this, which should be for the highest level award. If you do not hold a level 8 qualification (honours degree or higher diploma level 8) or you are unsure if your academic qualification is at level 8 or equivalent, see http://www.nqai.ie or http://www.nfq.ie, you must complete and submit an Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) Document

Admission to the programme will be subject to the internal university approval process. - (SUBJECT TO APPROVAL BY THE RELEVANT COLLEGE BOARDS)

English Language Requirements:

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Certificate (if applicable). Applicants whose first language or primary language of expression is not English must provide evidence that their English language ability meets the required standard for admission. The minimum required score is 7.0 on the IELTS assessment test. The test must have been completed in the last two years. For details of these English Language Proficiency Tests, see http://www.ielts.org/ An A4 (or equivalent) size copy of the IELTS document must be sent by post to the Postgraduate Applications Centre with your Postgraduate Application Number. The original document should not be sent as it will not be returned by PAC.

Part-Time Taught Postgraduate Programmes
