Overview of Clinical Pharmacy (MSc)

All students register for the MSc in Clinical Pharmacy(Pathway I). This consists of a two year distance learning programme, which is supported by regular compulsory teleconferences. It is offered by the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork.

There is a compulsory introductory workshop held in UCC at the start of year one. Areas covered include clinical pharmacy skills, rational prescribing, medication safety and pharmacoeconomics along with different clinical areas. End of year exams consists of written examinations in UCC at the end of both years and also oral examinations at the end of year two.

At the end of year two the student completes a research assignment which will form the basis of the MSc dissertation that has to be submitted at the end of September in year two of the course. An internal examiner from the UCC School of Pharmacy is appointed for each research project.
There is another option available to students who hold a Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy from other recognised institutions. This is the one year MSc course ( see pathway II).

The course comprises of taught modules by distance learning, a clinical attachment in the workplace and a thesis.

The distance learning modules will consist of formal teaching material, individual assignments and practical logbook exercises. The students will communicate with the module co-ordinators and each other by way of regular teleconferences and via the Internet (using Blackboard). In addition, students will be required to undertake a clinical attachment, in their workplace, under the supervision of a designated tutor. Both the workplace and the tutor will need to be approved by the Programme Committee, prior to the start of the programme.

Course materials will be circulated in hard copy and, in some instances, electronically according to a strict programme timetable and all module assignments (workbooks, case studies, other personal assignments) must be returned within designated time-points.

What will I be Studying?

The programme is made up of two parts. Part 1 constitutes 60 credits of taught modules. Part 2 consitutes 30 credits of a research project.

In Part 1 students must take a minimum of 30 credits in the first academic year. Students cannot proceed to Year 2 of the programme unless Year 1 has been passed. The taught modules will incorporate a combination of self-instructional printed materials (i.e printed module workbooks), teleconferences, web-based seminars and on-line assessments.

Part 1

Students take 60 credits as follows:
PF6001 Biostatistics/Critical Appraisal (5 credits)
PF6005 Pharmacoeconomics (5 credits)
PF6006 Pharmacotherapy II (15 credits)

PF6007 Pharmacotherapy 111 (10 credits)

PF6009 Pharmacotherapy I (15 credits)
PF6010 Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Rational Use of Drugs (10 credits)

Part 2

Students take 30 credits as follows:

PF6008 Research Project Clinical Pharmacy (30 credits)

Upon completion of the taught modules (60 credits) students may opt not to proceed with the programme and be conferred with a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy.

Programme Requirements (Pathway II - one year programme)
Students take 45 credits as follows:
PF6001 Biostatistics/Critical Appraisal (5 credits)
PF6007 Pharmacotherapy III (10 credits)
PF6008 Dissertation (30 credits)

Entry Requirements (Pathway I)

Candidates must hold a primary pharmacy degree from a School of Pharmacy that is approved by the Programme Committee.
They must be registered with the professional accreditation authority in the country in which they are practising.
Ideally candidates should have practical experience in their area of qualifications of at least two years post-registration.
All candidates will be required to have full access to computer and internet facilities and to be computer literate.
Candiates must be employed by an agreed hospital or community pharmacy and must have a letter of consent/support from the hospital of employment from their employer/supporting GP (where relevant) before registration.
In some exceptional circumstances candidates, who by virtue of their training and experience, may, at the discretion of the Programme Director and the Head of School, be deemed suitable for entry to the degree.

Entry Requirements (Pathway II)
In addition to the above:

The Programme Management Committee may permit graduates holding a Postgraduate Certificate (equivalent to Level 9 award) in Clinical Pharmacy or a Postgraduate Diploma (equivalent to Level 9 award) in Clinical Pharmacy from an appropriately accredited School of Pharmacy to enter a one-year programme. To be considered for entry to this programme, candidates must have completed their Clinical Pharmacy Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma no more than five years prior to the date of registration for this programme.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent.
