Overview of Child and Family Law [LLM (Child and Family Law)] (LLM)

The LLM in Child and Family Law is a new taught postgraduate programme at University College Cork. It is the first such programme of its kind in Ireland and it builds on the Faculty’s wide range of expertise and knowledge in the area of child and family law. This innovative and original degree combines an important theoretical basis in child law and family law with exposure to the challenges of legal practice through its commitment to clinical education. It is the perfect specialist qualification for those seeking to improve their knowledge of child and family law. Graduates will be well placed to seek employment in any area of child or family law, nationally or internationally, whether in law reform, the children’s sector, in research or in legal practice.

Taught LLM Scholarships:
Up to two fees scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis across all the LLM Programmes on offer.

What will I be Studying?

Students taking the LLM (Child and Family Law) must take a total of 90 credits consisting of the following:

Compulsory Modules (60 credits) The LLM in Child and Family Law involves three taught compulsory modules in the area of Child Law and Family Law (10 credits each).

Child Law (Clinical) (10 credits) is an innovative course that covers Irish child law and policy from a clinical perspective. The course examines the challenges of advancing the interests and rights of children through legal practice and law reform.

The Family and the Law (10 credits) is a wide ranging family law module covering the Irish constitutional and legislative framework. Topics covered will include divorce, civil partnership and the nature of family relationships.

Children’s Rights (10 credits) will consider children's rights from both an Irish and an international perspective, with particular emphasis on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the European Convention on Human Rights.

In addition students complete their minor thesis in the child and family law area generally, under the supervision of one of the Law Faculty’s dedicated staff in the field. The thesis is worth 30 credits and is normally 12,500 words in length.

Students then choose a further three modules from the list below

Note: In certain cases with the permission of the Programme Director, students may choose to take 1 module from the list available for the LLM (Mode A) degree other than one of the elective modules listed above.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must normally:

· (a) Hold a BCL (Hons) Degree from the National University of Ireland with at least Second Class Honours Grade 1 (2:1) or a Second Class Honours LLB Degree from University College Cork.

· (b) Have such other relevant third level educational qualifications and/or professional experience as, in the opinion of the Faculty of law, qualifies the candidate to undertake the LLM (Child and Family Law).

Applications from overseas candidates are welcome and their qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis under (b) above. Non-EU applicants should contact the International Education Office by email at internationalpostgrad@ucc.ie for application details.

The programme can be taken over 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent

From 2012, the Law Faculty will use a system of offer rounds to facilitate decision-making and early notification to applicants. Candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Candidates who do not have their final degree marks available may be made a conditional (provisional) offer. The offer round closing dates for taught programmes are as follows:

1st Round Closing Date: 1st May 2012
2nd Round Closing Date: 22 June 2012

3rd Round Closing Date: 24 August 2012
