Duration: This one year full-time programme offers a postgraduate route to a career in professional accounting. The programme offers students the chance to ‘front load’ much of the study and examination requirements involved in qualifying as an accountant. On successfully completing all requirements of the programme graduates of the M Acc will gain full exemption from all but the Final Admitting Examination (FAE) of Chartered Accountants Ireland.

Overview of Accounting (MAcc) (MACC)

This programme teaches the core material required in the professional examinations and adds an additional dimension to the academic experience with professional development in financial research, analysis and communication. Group activities and learning through case studies will be integral to the student experience. Course delivery will support the development of key skills in written, verbal and interpersonal communication. Students take six taught modules (totalling 60 credits) in part I plus 30 credits devoted to the development of independent research skills relevant to the work of a modern professional accountant in practice, industry and financial services.

Part II

AC6207 Financial Research, Analysis and Communication (15 credits)
AC6208 Accounting Research Project (15 credits)

The Accounting Research Project to be submitted in August gives students the opportunity to apply independent research skills and work in a small group to prepare a comprehensive research report.

Workload

Students can expect an average of 15 contact hours per week. There is also a significant commitment in terms of homework assignments, case study preparation and individual study. The workload reflects the demands expected in the early stages of a professional career and students should plan their year on the basis that this is a full time course.

Entry Requirements

Entrants must have a minimum of Second Class Honours grade 1 in a degree with a significant accounting specialisation and must qualify for exemption from the CA Proficiency 1 examination of Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI). Students who do not meet the exemption requirement in full by the registration date may only be admitted in exceptional circumstances following approval by the Faculty of Commerce.

(Applicants should note that eligibility for CAI exemptions awarded on successful completion of this Masters degree are dependent on the student having also satisfied in full the CA Proficiency 1 exemption requirement).

The degree prepares graduates for employment as trainee accountants and was designed with significant contribution from partners, directors and training managers in major accounting firms. Each of the “Big 4” firms (Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PwC) has indicated a willingness to support students who wish to complete the M Acc at UCC prior to undertaking professional training.
