UCC Hockey Update 08/04/24

8 Apr 2024
With the Orange Wind warning last weekend the Division 2 and 3 games were postponed.

The W1sts headed to Lurgan on Friday and played their last EYHL2 game before the play offs on Saturday. Lurgan went into the lead in the 2 nd quarter with a goal from Stephanie Thompson from a penalty corner. HT 1-0. UCC scored from a penalty corner in the 3 rd quarter, 1-1. In the 4 th quarter UCC went into the lead through a Nikki Barry goal. The student side could not hold out however and Lurgan scored to equalise. FT 2-2. UCC were unbeaten in their pool with 34 points and look forward to seeing who their opposition will be in the EYHL2 Playoffs, which are being played in Garryduff on the 20th/21 st April. Semi final match time to be confirmed.

The team have one more league game against Ashton this Saturday in Ashton, tip off 12.30pm. Both Cork Harlequins and UCC are on 36 points with a game to play. A win for both will mean a play off game for the Munster league title.

The only other game for UCC this weekend was the Division 5 League game against Clonakilty. This was the final game in the league for the Div 5 team. Crescent with 34 points meant this game had no consequence for the student side. A win would mean second place in the league. UCC got off to a slow start playing against a strong wind in the first half. Clonakilty who hosted in Bandon, scored 2 goals in the first quarter. UCC did get one back before half time with a goal from Laura Bermingham (her first goal ever for UCC). With the wind with them in the second half UCC scored 3 more goals with 2 from Laura Barr and 1 from Meabh Hughes. FT 2-4. It was a good win and finish for the Division 5 team who await their fate and see if they will be promoted automatically or face a playoff game for promotion.

Both Division 2 and 3 play their final league games this week. A win for the Division 3 side will mean a play off opportunity for promotion to Division 2. UCC will maintain their 2 nd place in the Division 2 league whatever the result !
