This symposium invites participation from scholars working both in the area traditionally constituted as Mexican Studies and also in the area of Mexican-American and/or Chicano Studies. Its focus is deliberately expansive and we welcome proposals that will illuminate current approaches to, explorations of and pathways through these rich multidisciplinary fields that are underpinned by work in both the social sciences and humanities. The symposium aims to showcase research into Mexican and Mexican-American Studies as currently conceptualised, studied and taught in the academy. The symposium provides the opportunity to debate and discuss scholarly research and inquiry on Mexico from a diverse range of disciplinary perspectives. - EU Careers Ambassador Talk - Boole 2 - Wednesday, 29 January 2014 - 6pm. He will give a talk on what jobs / internships are on offer and how to apply for them. Mary McCarthy (UCC Careers) will also speak at this event on EU Careers.
- Postgraduate Open Day - Aula Maxima - Tuesday, 4 February 2014. A stand to promote EU Careers will be staffed by Oliver and representatives from relevant EU Dublin offices.
- Minister of State for European Affairs visit to UCC - Boole 3 - Wednesday, 12 March 2014 - 1pm. The Minister of State for European Affairs, Paschal Donoghue TD, will visit UCC on 12 March 2014. He will deliver an address to UCC students, staff and graduates on the various EU career opportunities that are open to UCC graduates.

Dr Kevin Cawley is one of 5 research collaborators for a Korean Studies project that has been awarded c.120,000 Euro (40,000 x 3 years) by the Academy of Korean Studies in South Korea. Dr Kevin Cawley, Director of the Irish Institute of Korean Studies, would like to congratulate the 9 students from Korean Studies at UCC who participated in the 3rd Joint Korean Studies Conference at the University of Bologna (UNIBO) in May. Students from Korean Studies at UCC gave impressive presentations on a variety of topics, including gender and K-Media semiotics, translation and NK refugee issues, as well as student activism and anarchism in SK. The conference was fully funded by an award from the Academy Of Korean Studies.

How Objects of Prestige Shaped the Atlantic Slave Trade and Colonialism

Ana Lucia Araujo is a social and cultural historian writing transnational and comparative history. Currently, she is a Full Professor of History at the historically black Howard University in Washington DC, United States. Her work explores the history of slavery and the Atlantic slave trade and their present-day legacies, including the long history of calls for reparations for slavery and colonialism. Her research also examines the memory, heritage, and visual culture of slavery. She will speak on the topic of her new monograph with Cambridge University Press, The Gift: How Objects of Prestige Shaped the Atlantic Slave Trade and Colonialism (2023).
