Congratulations to Ruth Maher, 3rd year pharmacy student at the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork, who presented her research poster at the College of Medicine and Health Research Conference "Futures 2024: Transforming Tomorrow's Health" on 12th December.

The School of Pharmacy, UCC recently welcomed distinguished Japanese academics, Dr Shingo Sakurai, Dr Ryoko Naruse and Dr Osamu Hiruta, along with colleagues Hisatoshi Ito and Tomohiko Takemi from FUJIFILM Toyama Chemical Co. for a visit focused on learning more about the UCC’s Qualified Person (QP) training program. 

We were delighted to welcome the MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems (QP Masters) students to a 3-day workshop here in the School of Pharmacy. 

University College Cork held its 36th Annual Long Service Awards on 5 December 2024, recognising 83 staff members who have dedicated significant years to the institution.

The Cork Convention Bureau hosted the 8th Conference Ambassador Award Ceremony on Thursday 28th November in the Kingsley Hotel, where School of Pharmacy staff were honoured to receive an award in recognition for hosting the 30th Health Services Research and Pharmacy Practice (HSRPP) Conference on 25th-26th April 2024 in University College Cork (UCC).

Dr Kieran Dalton, Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy, won the Practice-Based Research Award at the Pharmacy Excellence Awards Ceremony, which took place on Saturday 30^th November in the Mansion House, Dublin. 

Dr Aoife Fleming and Dr Teresa Barbosa  took an active role in World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW), engaging students on the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The UCC Entrance Scholarship Awards Ceremony for the College of Medicine and Health took place in the Devere Hall, Student Centre on Wednesday, 27 November, followed by a reception of the awardees and their families in the Hub.

UCC pharmacy students had the opportunity to explore career opportunities during a virtual industry career information event held on Monday, 7 October 2024. 

Professor Brendan Griffin, Dr Patrick O’Dwyer, and Dr Harriet Bennett-Lenane, have received €950,000 in funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop critical medicines for improving global health and equality.

This week the School of Pharmacy has been hosting its first Wobble Week - a week of activities to support students who are feeling overwhelmed by university.

Fifth- year students took part in Cardiac First Response training workshops delivered by the Department of Paramedicine in October and early November.

Dr Jatin Nagpal, a joint faculty member of the School of Pharmacy and the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at University College Cork, has been awarded the prestigious APC Future Leaders Award by APC Microbiome Ireland.

This week, we were delighted and honoured to welcome James Leonard, co-host of the Two Norries Podcast, to our annual School Assembly. James shared his powerful life story, reflecting on his experiences with addiction, incarceration, and his inspiring return to education.

University College Cork was proud to host the PPI Ignite Festival 2024, running from 1st to 31st October. As part of this national celebration of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI), the Clinical Pharmacy group from the School of Pharmacy and the Department of General Practice held a kick-off event for our new PPI partnership on Wednesday, 2nd October 2024.

Darren Breathnach, a PhD candidate and adjunct clinical lecturer in the School of Pharmacy, UCC, was named Pharmasource Irish Hospital Pharmacist of the Year at the Hospital Professional Honours, held on 14 September 2024. This award recognises his impactful work in geriatric oncology and his efforts to enhance patient care models.

Five researchers from the School of Pharmacy, UCC have been named among the top 2% of most-cited academics in their fields worldwide in the 2024 Elsevier/Stanford University World Rankings of Researchers.

Congratulations to PhD researcher Ayat Elgammal for winning the PCCA Prize for Best Poster Presentation at the 16th Conference of the European Paediatric Formulation Initiative (EuPFI), held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Congratulations to Dr Kieran Walsh, Deputy Director HTA, HIQA and Adjunct Clinical Senior Lecturer School of Pharmacy who was a co-applicant of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) team that were successfully awarded €2.5 million from the Health Research Board (HRB).

Professor Caitriona O'Driscoll, Chair of Pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy and Director of UCC Futures - Future Medicines, presented at the 21st International Pharmaceutical Technology Symposium in Ankara, Turkey, on 10 September 2024. 

Olga Andriyashchenko is a BPharm4 student and UCC Quercus Scholar who recently completed an 8 week summer internship after competitively securing funding via a HRB Summer Studentship award.

On Tuesday, 13 August 2024, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, T.D., launched the final report from the Expert Taskforce to Support the Expansion of the Role of Pharmacy.

A newly announced strategic partnership between the School of Pharmacy, UCC and the Pharmacy Department at St Patrick’s Mental Health Services (SPMHS) will see the two organisations come together over the coming five years to advance research and clinical training in mental health pharmacy.

Jack Murray, a PhD researcher at the School of Pharmacy, has been named one of the 21 Irish Fulbright Awardees for 2024/2025. The award recipients were honored last week at a ceremony held at Iveagh House, the headquarters of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

On 29 May 2024, Christian Waeber, Professor in Pharmacology with the School of Pharmacy and Head of the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, was named a joint winner of the Creating a Culture for Responsible Conduct of Research award at the 2023 University College Cork Research and Innovation Awards. This award recognises significant contributions to research and innovation. He was honoured for promoting ethical practices in the use of animals in research, enhancing UCC's reputation both nationally and internationally.

The School of Pharmacy was delighted to host the 30^th Health Services Research and Pharmacy Practice (HSRPP) Conference on 25-26 April 2024 in Cork, the theme of which was 'Sustainable Development in Healthcare'. The conference attracted over 110 national and international delegates from over 15 countries across a range of disciplines, bringing together leading experts in the areas of health services and pharmacy research, as well as pharmacy practice and education.

UCC's Pharmacy Society (Pharmsoc) is thrilled to reflect on another successful academic year of activities. 

Professor Caitriona O'Driscoll, Chair of Pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy, and Director of UCC Futures - Future Medicines, has been elected as a member of the prestigious Royal Irish Academy (RIA). She was among 28 new members admitted Friday 24 May 2024 for their exceptional contributions to the sciences, humanities, and social science, as well as to public service.

A new MSc in Pharmaceutical Regulatory Sciences has been launched by the School of Pharmacy. Graduates of the HCI Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmaceutical Regulatory Sciences who have achieved a Second Class Honours Grade 1 or above are eligible to complete the 30-credit dissertation module to achieve the MSc.

The industry education hub, iEd Hub, at UCC is launching their Autumn 2024 catalogue of programmes starting this September. Whether you’re interested in master’s programmes or Micro-credentials, there’s something for everyone. The School of Pharmacy is delivering a number of new programmes as part of the iEd Hub.

As part of on-campus activities to promote diversity, inclusion and WiSTEM (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) opportunities, undergraduate BPharm2, BPharm3, BPharm4 and PhD students from the School of Pharmacy were involved in delivering the FANTASTIC DNA workshop to primary school students from North Presentation and Togher Girls National Schools on 27 February last.

A new initiative at UCC aims to establish a Medical Humanities Network, named COMHRÁ - (Cork Medical Humanities Research and Teaching Alliance) to explore the intersection of medicine and the humanities.

The School of Pharmacy hosted a collaborative event on 22nd January, organised by 'Future Medicines' and 'Future Ageing and Brain Science', to explore Medical Humanities.

The mild, spring weather on the afternoon of Monday, 19 February raised the mood of all the BPharm3 students who attended the annual tour of UCC’s Arboretum.
