Atlantic Corridor 2022
UCC School of Medicine hosted the 8th Annual Atlantic Corridor Medical Student Research Conference on the 11th of November 2022 at Brookfield Health Sciences Complex.
Each year, this intervarsity research meeting brings together medical students from across two of the ‘Atlantic Corridor’ medical schools – UCC and University of Galway – to showcase research they have conducted. Covering topics ranging from management of gestational diabetes to novel therapeutics for nerve regeneration, attendees enjoyed presentations on a diverse range of clinical and translational medical research projects. There were 12 oral presentations and 30 poster presentations, and the plenary lecture was delivered by Professor Subrata Ghosh, Professor and Chair of Medicine, School of Medicine, at UCC.
This year’s oral presentation winner was Aneesa Mangalam Lonappan (University of Galway) for her paper “Oral colonisation by drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria among patients with a diagnosis of treatment resistant schizophrenia”. The runner up was UCC medical student Caoimhe Cronin (UCC) for her paper “Anaphylaxis management and adrenaline auto injector use: assessing knowledge and piloting a virtual educational intervention for parents of children with food allergies”. This year’s poster prize was awarded to Cathal Breathnach (University of Galway).
As we look ahead to next year’s meeting, which will be hosted by University of Galway, the Atlantic Corridor meeting continues to provide a wonderful opportunity for medical students to network with peers and faculty, learn about a wide range of topics and gain new research skills. The local organising committee thanks the School of Medicine Research and Postgraduate Affairs Committee for their financial support.
