Lecturer in Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy

Permanent Whole Time Post

Applications are invited for the above post in the School of Medicine. The successful candidates will play a key role in teaching, research and leadership. The successful candidate will support the delivery of the 2-year MSc in Diagnostic Radiography and MSc Radiation Therapy programmes and teach and coordinate elements of the postgraduate MSc in Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy online.

The successful candidate will have a BSc or MSc in Diagnostic Radiography, or other related disciplines and ideally have a PhD or equivalent. Duties will include practice education coordination, research-led clinical and classroom teaching, development of new course offerings, research supervision, and participation in discipline, school, and college committees. We expect to recruit hardworking people committed to excellence in teaching, curriculum development, and research dissemination.

The role is in-person, primarily based in University College Cork, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, Cork. Applicants without a doctorate should be prepared to embark on a research trajectory that includes publications and the completion of a PhD.

What is UCC Futures – Future Medicines 

UCC Futures - Future Medicines combines a multidisciplinary team of renowned world leading scientists, engineers and clinician investigators at University College Cork and affiliated hospitals to deliver high-impact, transformational, next generation medicines and medical technologies. 

It leverages the expertise and infrastructure across multiple Schools in UCC’s College of Medicine & Health, in addition to UCC Research Centres and Institutes including APC Microbiome Ireland and our flagship Tyndall National Institute. This unique translational environment will become a magnet for small & medium enterprise and  multi-national corporation investment in the region particularly across the biopharma, healthcare and medtech sectors. 

UCC Futures - Future Medicines is creating step-change advancements in earlier detection, faster prognosis and targeted treatments to reduce the global health burden and improve quality-of-life for patients with chronic conditions, such as cancer, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological, and inflammatory diseases.

Duties and Responsibilities

In accordance with the University’s strategic objective as a research-led institution, the responsibilities of all academic staff will include research, research-led teaching and contributions to the University, the discipline and the community. The academic staff member shall teach and examine, undertake administrative duties and carry out other duties appropriate to the post under the general direction of the Head of Discipline of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy or their nominee.

The roles and responsibilities outlined below will be interpreted in the context of the relevant Statutes. Where any difference arises from the interpretation, statutory provisions take precedence. For clarity, the appropriate elements of the statutes not already incorporated in the numbered sections are appended in italics under each subheading.

Academic Leadership | Teaching and Examining | Research | Contributions

Academic Leadership

  • Demonstrate academic leadership in the development of Practice Education through teaching, research and scholarship, collaboration with the HSE, private health providers any other appropriate manner;
  • On-site, in-person support of students and practice educators, and on-site, in-person participation in weekly practice education activities.

 

Teaching and Examining

  • Lead the Practice Education curriculum of the MSc Diagnostic Radiography;
  • Delegate responsibilities for placement coordination among other lecturers;
  • Train and coordinate a team of Practice Tutors across Ireland;
  • Manage the annual and day-to-day practice education timetables of students in the discipline;
  • Contribute to practice education all programmes in the discipline, MSCDR, MSCRT, MSCMIRS and any future programmes;
  • Contribute to and assist in the delivery of research-led teaching, assessment and examination on courses at the postgraduate level and, where appropriate, adult and continuing education courses;
  • Supervise research projects for postgraduate programmes;
  • Undertake the development and regular evaluation of modules concerning content, delivery and assessment;
  • Participate in  the development of new curricular initiatives;
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning and apply innovative teaching and learning methodologies within the School of Medicine and other academic units in the University, as appropriate;
  • Contribute towards the maintenance of academic standards within their discipline
  • to give the students attending his/her ordinary lectures assistance in their studies, by advice, by informal instruction, by occasional and periodic examination, and otherwise, as s/he may judge to be expedient; also, to make such arrangements as s/he sees fit to make to meet students who have individual queries;
  • to give instruction to his/her students and assist them in the pursuit of knowledge
  • to hold, or assist at, all University examinations in the subjects with which s/he is an examiner;

 

Research

  • Engage in scholarship, contribute to advancing knowledge, and participate in research activities;
  • Publish research, creative works or other forms of scholarship appropriate to the discipline in proper peer-reviewed publications;
  • Present research at national and international conferences;
  • Supervise research within MSc in Diagnostic Radiography and contribute to the supervision of students in higher degrees;
  • Undertake initiatives in generating research income as appropriate to the discipline;
  • Engage in presentations and other scholarly activities relevant to the research discipline;
  • Carry out initiatives in generating research income and assist in the coordination of research funding activities within the discipline department/school, as appropriate to the discipline.

 

Contributions

  • Participate in the administrative activities of the discipline/department/school and the academic life of the College and University;
  • Act as a member of such committees as may be required by the University;
  • Develop links with professional bodies and external agencies, where appropriate;
  • Promote the discipline both inside and outside the University and contribute to the overall intellectual life of the University and society;
  • Carry out other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned by the head of discipline/school;

  • Develop links with professional bodies and external agencies, where appropriate;

  • to carry out administrative and other appropriate duties lawfully allocated to them within their department or other academic unit;

  • to serve upon all the committees to which s/he may be appointed by the Governing Body or the Academic Council, and to assist and co-operate with the Governing Body in such other reasonable ways as the Governing Body may prescribe, for the maintenance of discipline and good conduct among the students, or for the general business of the University;

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  1. A BSc or MSc in Diagnostic Radiography, or equivalent;
  2. Registerable with CORU under the Radiographers Registration Board.

Desirable Criteria

  1. A doctorate or equivalent professional qualification or research experience, including publications equivalent to a doctoral thesis in Diagnostic Radiography, Radiation Therapy, Medical Physics or equivalent;
  2. A qualification in tertiary education practice, such as a graduate certificate in teaching and learning or a fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

 

Teaching and Examining

Essential Criteria

  1. Demonstrated teaching excellence in Diagnostic Radiography, or equivalent education delivery. Evidence can include job descriptions, testimonials, student feedback, peer review of teaching, teaching awards, and scholarship in teaching and learning;
  2. Demonstrated contribution across clinical, undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching programmes in Diagnostic Radiography, or equivalent.

Desirable Criteria

  1. Evidence of practice education;
  2. Evidence of the use of modern teaching technologies;
  3. Evidence of innovative teaching and curriculum development;
  4. Evidence of teaching, inspiring and supervising students, communicating ideas and concepts in a teaching and learning environment;
  5. Evidence of a commitment to excellence in research-led teaching.

 

Research

Desirable Criteria

  1. Evidence of supervision of student research at MSc and/or PhD level;
  2. Evidence of a research trajectory that includes a PhD or commitment to completion of PhD (for candidates appointed prior to completion of same) and pursuit of own research agenda;
  3. Published peer-reviewed research, presented national and international presentations;
  4. Evidence of efforts to attract funding through competitive research grants or other sources as relevant;
  5. Experience of or potential for research supervision (particularly PhD students);
  6. Evidence of other relevant scholarly activity;
  7. Ability and willingness to collaborate with colleagues on research projects appropriate to the discipline.

 

Contributions

Desirable Criteria

  1. Evidence of participation in and contribution to the overall intellectual life of the University, the academic discipline, society, and the professional community;
  2. Administrative experience or evidence of ability to contribute to academic administration;
  3. Experience in or potential to participate in relevant academic and professional associations/bodies as appropriate.

 

Other

Essential Criteria

  1. Knowledge of the practice educational structure across Ireland and within the Discipline of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy, UCC;
  2. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  3. Evidence of ability to work on own initiative and part of a team;
  4. Ability and willingness to work in a collaborative environment;
  5. An understanding of and empathy with the concerns of students;
  6. A commitment to the long-term development of the discipline.

Salary Information

Appointment may be made on the Lecturer Salary Scale:
  • Below the Bar: €42,102 - €72,452
Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
