Biography:

Barrie is responsible for communications and public engagement activities for the Centre for Health and Diet Research and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. Currently he is working on new logo/branding/website for the Centre, various dissemination projects for the Department and Centre, recording content for both online courses and for public engagement, and helping researchers maximise the impact of research outputs.

His main research interests are food choice, food poverty, the democratisation of food and the food policy that shapes these areas. Currently he is working on updating the ‘Health Profile for Cork County’ indicators relating to food and preparing a quantitative analysis (conducted as part of the MPH) for publication.

In 2016 he graduated with a Masters of Public Health with specialisation in advanced epidemiology – dissertation on early-life antibiotics exposures, in utero and up to 3 years old, and the associated risk of being obese or overweight at age 5; and 2015 a Bachelors in Social Science in 2015 - dissertation a quantitative analysis describing the level of childcare being provided by grandparents in Ireland from 2007 to 2011 using the Growing Up in Ireland dataset; for which he was awarded UCC college scholar.

Barrie is also an artisan food producer and active committee member for the Cork Food Policy Council and the Midleton Farmers Market Society.

When not engaged with food in one way or another he likes to sail competitively, mess round with technology and record documentaries for radio.
