The BLACK City Astrolabe at the Laboratory of the Future, Venice Biennale 2023

A discussion with J. Yolande Daniels on her work at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2023.

  1. Yolande Danielsis Associate Professor and Director of Architecture and Urbanism at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A prizewinning architect, Daniels founded studioSUMO in Los Angeles. Her independent design research explores the spatial effects of race and gender in the built environment, focusing on revealing narratives of resistance and autonomy. In particular, Daniels’ work takes as a focus documenting and representing spaces that have been rendered adjunct to - yet supplement and maintain, dominant spatial and political systems of power.

This was on view in her striking contribution to this year's Venice Biennale in an especially selected installation work that presented a "constellation of African diasporic women". The diaspora map in the form of a walk-through installation in the Arsenale traces the flows of descendants of Africa (whether voluntary or forced) and their space-time coordinates, atop the visible tension between the mathematical regularity of meridians of longitude and the biases of international date lines.

Lecture Followed by Q & A with Professor Adrian Favell, Director, Radical Humanities Laboratory, UCC.
