Welcome

Speech and Language Therapy at UCC

Welcome to the Website of the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, University College Cork.

Speech and Language Therapy (Speech Pathology) is a clinical therapeutic profession that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders, of communication and swallowing. It is grounded in various theoretical frameworks such as linguistics, psychology, medicine and sociology.

Speech and language therapists work in hospitals, community centres, schools, in private practices and homes. Communication is vital to human life and social interaction; and the loss of speech and language and/or the loss of eating, drinking and swallowing can have a serious impact on the life of the individual. Speech and language therapist interventions therefore have the potential for far-reaching effects on human happiness and well-being.

The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences provides a qualifying undergraduate degree in Speech and Language therapy (Speech Pathology) accredited by the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists (IASLT); along with the clinical hours required for practice as a Speech and Language therapist in the Republic of Ireland.Graduates are also eligible to apply to work in many other locations throughout the world.

In addition, the Department runs an MSc in Evidence Based Therapy Practice with the Department of Occupational Therapy. There are also MSc by Research, MPhil, and PhD programmes available.
