UCC receives prestigious accreditation for BSc Nutritional Sciences
UCC’s BSc (Hons) in Nutritional Sciences was recently accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN). The accreditation is a significant achievement, allowing graduates to be directly added to the professionally recognised Register of Nutritionists for the UK and Ireland with the title of Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) on graduation.
Achieving this esteemed accreditation recognises the quality of the teaching and training provided by UCC, ensuring that students gain the appropriate knowledge, professional skills, competencies and experience necessary for a nutritionist or nutrition professional.
The four-year BSc in Nutritional Sciences is managed by UCC's School of Food and Nutritional Sciences and includes a six-month work placement. The course allows students to engage with competent, qualified nutrition experts in a programme of study founded on evidence-based, research-led teaching and learning.
Dr Alice Lucey, Programme Director, BSc Nutritional Sciences commented:
“The BSc (Hons) Nutritional Sciences is now fully accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN), providing our future graduates with direct entry to the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists, a register of competent, qualified, nutrition professionals who meet AfN standards for scientific, evidence-based nutrition. This allows our future graduates to use the designation “ANutr”, a mark of professionalism, and an indication of the quality of a programme rooted in a science-based tradition with a rigorous approach to evidence, the sharing of best practice, and lifelong learning”.
The AfN governs the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN) which distinguishes nutrition practitioners who meet rigorously applied training, competence and professional practice criteria for Nutrition.
UCC’s BSC in Nutritional Sciences prepares students to work in a variety of career sectors including medical and healthcare, health promotion, food regulation and within the food and beverage sector, biological, chemical, and pharmaceutical sciences, sports and performance. The food industry is a significant employer, with graduates securing roles in many national and international food companies. Many graduates pursue further studies in specialist areas including clinical nutrition/dietetics, sports nutrition, and public health nutrition.
