Module Objective: To expand students' knowledge and critical thinking skills in the use of a wide range of recovery-focused psychosocial interventions when working with individuals and their family, friends and/or supporters.
Module Content: Application of the principles of structured psycho-social interventions underpinned by the recovery ethos and the development of a therapeutic alliance through the process of assessment and evaluation of a persons and their friends' families and/or supporters needs. For example; in the application of the principles of Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Open Dialogue, Family Therapy or Family-centred care.
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the applicability of a wide range of psychosocial interventions in specialist mental health nursing practice and critically discuss the respective theories and principles underpinning a range of psychosocial interventions.
- Critically evaluate the quality, safety, and effectiveness of a wide range of psychosocial interventions.
- Critically appraise and evaluate current research and best practice evidence when applying the skills of psychosocial interventions.
- Integrate the principles and practices of partnership and/or co-production into one’s current work with service users and their families, carers and/or supporters.
- Critically discuss the development of a working therapeutic alliance with service users and their families, carers and/or supporters.
- Apply the principles and processes of engaging service users experiencing mental distress, taking into account the problems encountered by individuals and their families, carers/supporters in establishing trust and understanding because of factors such as their gender, ethnic background, or age.
- Critically discuss a range of approaches such as recovery orientated, strengths-based or trauma-informed care when working with service users and their families, carers and/or supporters in specialist mental health nursing practice.
- Evaluate the factors that may help or hinder recovery and critically reflect on one’s own specialist practice in relation to these.
- Conduct a comprehensive mental health assessment and formulate a collaborative treatment plan utilising the general principles and processes of evidence based psychosocial interventions.
