Transition Year students do IT for real at UCC’s Computer Science Department!
12.02.2009

UCC’s Computer Science Department is hosting a Work Experience Programme for transition year students this week (February 9th-13th).
Fourteen transition year students from different parts of Cork, including Charleville, Castletownbere, and Cork City are participating in the programme which was launched by Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Head of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science at UCC.

The aim of the course is to give interested students work experience in Information Technology (IT) and the opportunity to consider a career in Computer Science.

“There seems to be an general uncertainty amongst secondary school students about Computer Science, what it is all about, what the course entails, and the various careers options available to potential graduates”, explained Martin Moriarty, Chairman of the Computer Science Public Relations Committee. “This course is one of a range of services that the Department has introduced, in order to bridge the gap. The students will gain exposure to skills such as system administration, hardware, designing a web page and programming skills as well as talks and presentations on Careers, Admissions, and Computer Science in general. It is envisaged that this course will be extended and built on over time, to give secondary school students a greater insight into Information Technology, and the opportunities on offer.”

Any enquiries about the Department’s transition year courses, School Visits or Munster Programming training may be made to doit4real@cs.ucc.ie
