Internationally renowned sociologist to launch book
12.11.2009

Internationally renowned sociologist Klaus Eder will launch Critical Turns in Critical Theory: New Directions in Social and Political Thought, the Festschrift in honour of Piet Strydom at UCC today (November 12th 2009) at 5pm in the O’Rahilly Building, UCC.
The Festschrift, which is edited by Dr Séamus Ó Tuama of the Department of Government, UCC, is published by Tauris. It brings together a diverse range of scholars to discuss key issues facing civil society today. It explores new theories, critiques, analyses and practices to address debates about risk, responsibility, ethics, communication, the environment, science and technology, gender, identity, development and law.

It is inspired by the seminal work of Piet Strydom, the internationally acclaimed critical social theorist who has worked at the Department of Sociology, UCC since 1976. In the last two decades he has built a reputation as one of the key figures in contemporary social theory through a series of books and scholarly articles that have helped shape international discussion on many of the pressing concerns of our time.

Scholars of the standing of Jurgen Habermas and Ulrich Beck have credited him with shaping their thinking in significant ways. Accolades from his peers have included: ‘one of the truly leading theorists in his discipline’ (Sociological Research), ‘someone with unusual credentials and theoretical imagination (Contemporary Sociology).

The volume and quality of his work in recent times has been astounding, with his theory reaching an expanding audience as his work is translated and published in such places as India. His influence in UCC can be measured by the quality of the students he has produced in over three decades at the university.

Piet Strydom was forced to flee his native South Africa with his wife Sunette because of his opposition to the Apartheid Regime. He found his way to Cork via Belgium and Liverpool. His friend John O'Malley introduced him to the Department of Philosophy, he later moved to his true intellectual home in sociology.

Klaus Eder is professor of sociology at Humboldt University, Berlin and was previously professor of sociology at the European University Institute, Florence. His research focuses on macro-sociology, with an emphasis on historical and comparative structural analysis and political sociology. His work purses themes around democracy, collective action, political mobilization and political communication explored in the context of environmental and sociological research on Europe.

Pictured at the launch were L-R: Professor Peter Kennedy, Vice-President for Research, UCC, Piet Strydom, Professor Klaus Eder and Dr Séamus Ó Tuama
