Mercy University Hospital (MUH) first in Cork with Prescriber's Guide!
"How do I write a prescription for a drug controlled under the Misuse
of Drugs Act (MDA) legislation (Controlled Drugs)?" or "Despite giving
the patient cyclizine, he is still complaining of nausea, what else can
I give?" The answers to these questions and lots more can
be found in the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) Prescriber's Guide (PG)
which will be launched by Professor Robert McConnell, UCC's Acting Head
of Medicine and Health on Wednesday, 28 February.
The idea for a Prescriber's Guide was conceived some years ago by UCC
President, Dr Michael Murphy and Elizabeth Barron, Chief Pharmacist,
MUH. The purpose of the Guide is to provide practical treatment
guidelines for the more commonly encountered disease states and
encourage safe, effective and economic prescribing. It should
also remove the need to stock a wide range of drugs.
Professor Robert McConnell, speaking at the launch said he welcomed the
initiative by MUH to produce this Guide which should act as a valuable
tool for all healthcare professionals. "The Guide should assist
doctors, nurses, pharmacists in addressing any problems when drugs are
prescribed" said Professor McConnell. He congratulated all those
involved and referred to the timing of the launch which coincides with
the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Mercy Hospital founded
on St Patrick's Day 1857.
Doctors will be able to use the Guide, in conjunction with the British
National Formulary (BNF), on a daily basis to aid drug selection and to
access Mercy-specific information on monitoring of drugs whilst nurses
and other healthcare professionals will find the Guide of benefit in
the monitoring of side effects and notes and cautionary advice. The
Guide is available on every ward in MUH as a hard copy and also
electronically.
The Guide was produced with the support of the Drugs and Therapeutics
Committee, its Chairman, Professor David Kerins and Consultant
Pharmacist, Dr Laura Sahm.
The launch of the Guide takes place on Wednesday, 28 February at 1.00pm in the Mercy University Hospital.
