Ireland's Brightest Students Honoured at University College Cork Ceremony

"University College Cork (UCC) continues to attract students of the highest calibre" said Professor Paul Giller, UCC's Registrar and Vice-President for Academic Affairs when he presented parchments to over 70 Entrance Scholarship winners at a special awards ceremony at UCC on Monday, 12 December 2005.

Entrance scholarships up to €2000 are awarded each year to students across all faculties on the basis of the Leaving Certificate results.  All of the scholarship winners this year achieved 575 points or higher in the Leaving Certificate, across the Colleges of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Science, Business and Law, Science, Food Science and Engineering and Medicine and Health.

Professor Giller congratulated the scholarship holders on their outstanding achievements and paid tribute to the professionalism and commitment of their teachers and the support of their families.    He referred to UCC's selection as Ireland's University of the Year by The Sunday Times for the second time in three years.  "This award is attributable to UCC's reputation as a centre of excellence for teaching and research, position as the leading research institution in third-level education, high calibre students choosing UCC as first preference, outstanding quality of student experience and successful Access Programme" said Professor Giller.  He added "Of the 3,000 first year students in 2005, in excess of 60 per cent commenced a programme that was their first choice in the CAO system, unmatched by any other Irish university."  In conclusion, Professor Giller extended his congratulations to the families and friends of the scholarship recipients for their continued support and encouragement.

The ceremony which took place in the Multifunctional Hall, Aras na Mac Léinn, UCC was followed by a reception for the scholarship holders, their parents, school principals and guidance counsellors.  Academic staff also joined in the celebration.
